Valentine's Crayons

This year for Valentine's day we will be attending a party with our homeschool group so I wanted to come up with a fun Valentine for D to be able hand out. I have seen many posts floating around Pinterest of melting down crayons in the oven so we decided to roll with it.
We chose to use this brand of crayons because it has various shades of each color. We had a lot to make so we went through about 5 boxes but 1 box would do if just doing this for fun. They were 1.77 each at Walmart.
1. First I had D sort out all the colors. I had to help him a couple of times because some shades were harder to place.
2. Next we placed them in a bowl full of water to soak. I was going to do it one color at a time but D had other plans and dumped 3 colors in. I left them in the water for a few hours to let the paper soak it in.

3. We then peeled the labels off and then I used a paring knife to remove and stuck on paper or glue residue.

4. I bought this cute Wilton's Heart Silicone Mold for making our crayons, but you can make them in any shape you'd like. We sorted them in to the mold making sure there were light and dark shades in each spot.
5. Now comes the fun part of baking them and watching them melt. Set the oven to 250 degrees and bake for about 15 min while keeping an eye on them. D kept running to the window in the oven to see if they had melted yet. Let them cool in the mold for about 20 min before trying to take them out.
This is what our finish product looks like. I made a heart on PSE and printed them out and then used tape to attach on the crayons.

I also made a set for D to have for himself and he loves coloring with them. Going to be making his valentines box here soon so will share once it is completed. Our party is on Valentine's day so a lot to get done by then!!

Happy Creating!

Magic Tree House

Yesterday D and I attended the first meeting of a Magic Tree House Book Club. While some concepts of a book club are a little over D's comprehension level he really does enjoy listening to the adventures of Jack and Annie out loud. I personally love the adventure of the books while also teaching children about different places and events. The first book in the series is about Dinosaurs and is currently my sons favorite.
There are 48 books out right now with the 49th coming out this March.  There are currently 27 Fact Trackers that are companion books to some of the series including one for Dinosaurs Before Dark.

There is a website for both Kids and Parents/Teachers that give you many opportunities to explore and expand on the books. The parents/teacher site has a break down of each book along with activities and lessons that tie into the books. I recommend these books for students of all ages especially those interested in history and travel. Happy Reading!!

Introducing The Andrieu Family

We are a military family. My husband Nolan is in the U.S. Army and is currently on a 2 year tour in Japan. Dimitry and I are living in WA state with my family while he is gone. Nolan and I are both 24 and we have been married 4 1/2 years. Dimitry will be 4 the end of June and is in pre school and will be doing a more structured pre school next year.

I don't work so I get to spend all my time with D working with him, taking him to meet ups, and taking him to Tae Kwon Do that he started last week. I also spend a lot of time on the computer and Pinterest gets me in trouble on a daily basis. I am also working to develop my photography skills so you will get to see me grow as a photographer through this blog and my other blog Beautiful Joy Photography.

D is a very active and energetic little boy. He has Sensory Processing Disorder but it is not as severe as some kids but it does affect his daily life. He is very bright and we are moving right along with him learning the basics such as numbers and letters. He loves art, and we are learning that he loves sports.

New Year, New Begining

We started back in September working on Pre School with Dimitry but it wasn't till a few weeks ago after getting back from a trip to see my in laws that we  have really gotten down to business. We belong to a meet up group now that gives us opportunities to get out of the house to do art, field trips, and make new friends. We are just now getting into the swing of things but give me some time and this blog will be filled with our projects, trips, day to day life, and tips on homeschooling a pre schooler. My goal for this blog is to grow with us as we home school Dimitry and any future children we may have.
